1. What is the minimum age for participants?
Your child can take part in DAS Winter Camp if he/she is aged between 10 and 17 years of age.
2. Does my child have to know how to ski already?
No. Complete beginners as well as those with some ability to ski will receive daily lessons from experienced skiing instructors. Lessons are taught in small groups to ensure maximum attention and safety for each child. Everyone can learn how to ski.
If your child already knows how to ski, and you parents have given them permission, they will be able to ski relatively independently, with one of DAS Akademie’s staff providing necessary supervision. Advanced skiers do not receive instruction.
3. Where will the students stay?
All DAS Winter Camp students will stay in a hotel in Ahrntal and a hotel/hostel in Munich, in rooms with ensuite bathroom (shower/WC). No more than four (4) students share a room.
4. What kind of food will be provided?
There will be a rich buffet for breakfast, and a warm meal for lunch and dinner. A packed lunch will be provided for any day-trips. Outside of meal times, beverages, snacks and sweets can be bought. Please note that for internal reasons, free water cannot be provided during lunch at the ski slopes. Students will be able to purchase drinks there.
If your child is a vegetarian, does not eat pork or has any food allergies or other dietary requirements, please inform us at time of registration. Alternatives can be served for all meals.
5. How many camp counsellors accompany DAS Winter Camp?
In general, we have one (1) DAS team member per seven (7) to ten (10) students.
6. How can I stay in touch with my child during the camp? Is there Internet access/WiFi?
Modern technology has enabled us to be connected anytime, anywhere. We understand that you will miss your child, and that you would like to stay in touch with them while they’re away at camp. For pedagogical reasons, however, they should not spend the whole time they are there on their mobile/cell phones, which is why access to the Internet will be limited during DAS Winter Camp. Students will be able to purchase four (4) hours of WiFi access per week.
Of course, you will be able to phone them at any time – mobile/cell phone reception is generally available. We would like to encourage you, however, to allow your child to develop their skills for independent living while they are with us and limit your contact with them to a minimum. They will be all the more excited and have all the more to tell you when they return home! ?
Naturally, you’ll be given emergency contact details of the main DAS staff and of where we are staying. We will also try to upload some photos and short videos from the camp to our Facebook page as we go along.
7. What happens if my child falls ill during the camp?
The camp fee includes accident and travel health insurance cover. Should your child fall ill during the camp, we will take them immediately to the nearest doctor or hospital.
Please inform us of your child’s blood type, and whether they have any allergies or need to have medication regularly administered.
8. How much pocket money should I give my child?
The fee for DAS Winter Camp includes full board, and all excursions and recreational activities organised by DAS Akademie. The students themselves must pay any additional expenses. We recommend, according to age and interests, between 150,- EUR and 250,- EUR pocket money for your child. Of course, the actual amount is left to your discretion.
9. What kind of clothes should we pack for our child?
We recommend you pack your child’s suitcase together with them. Please make sure they take clothes that suit cold climate, snow and skiing (such as thermal underwear, ski socks, water-proof ski jacket and pants, wooly jumpers etc). A more comprehensive list is available upon request.
10. What are the rules at DAS Winter Camp?
- Each age group has fixed bed time hours.
- Alcohol and drugs are strictly prohibited!
- Participation during lessons is compulsory. Exceptions need to be cleared with DAS Akademie staff beforehand.
- In case of illness, a DAS Akademie team member should promptly be notified, in order to ensure adequate medical care.
- Please indicate a contact person in case there is an emergency.
11. Where can valuables be stored?
Generally, we advise you not to have your child bring valuables, if possible. Valuable items can be given to a member of DAS Akademie staff for safekeeping. Passports must be handed in for safety upon arrival at the camp and will be returned to participants before departure. Please do not bring laptops.
12. What are the language lessons like?
All teachers at DAS Akademie are native speakers. Students are placed in appropriate classes based on their language skills, in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference (levels A1 to C1). A class consists of a maximum of 15 participants – this ensures effective learning. We emphasize communicative and immersive teaching, which means that students practice the German language while having fun, without any fear or inhibitions.
13. Is there an exam?
At the end of DAS Winter Camp, there will be a final exam. The test is considered passed if 50 percent of the tasks are completed successfully. On successful completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Participation from DAS Akademie.
